Getting through transitions

Try these ⬇️

Ever tried to leave the house with a toddler who’s not having it? 🙋‍♀️ It can feel like moving mountains! Here’s why:

Kids’ nervous systems are still developing, and transitioning from the comfort of home to the big, unpredictable world can feel overwhelming for them—kind of like how we might feel heading into a big, unfamiliar meeting. It doesn't mean they don't want to go. Their protesting behaviours are saying "I'm unsure, I'm scared, help me."

Here are a few things that have helped us:

1️⃣ Predictability: Having a routine is key. We chat about what’s coming up tomorrow and on the day we do our best to give fair warning of a transition and what to expect. Sometimes we show photos on our phone of where we're going so our kids can visualise it, and we talk about what will happen there and when we'll come home.

2️⃣ Comfort Item: Bringing a favorite toy or blanket can provide some much-needed security. It’s like our version of having a coffee in hand! Our kids like to pack their own bags full of toys and what they think they need for an adventure!

3️⃣ Playful Transitions: Turning the transition into a game has been a game-changer for us. Pretending we’re going on an adventure or playing a little game like racing to the car or checking the post box first can make leaving the house exciting instead of scary.

4️⃣ No Pressure: Sometimes, just getting out the door is a win. We’ve learned it’s okay to leave without shoes and coat if it makes things easier. You can always put them on once you’re out, and it gives children their independence and autonomy when they can request and choose to put on their things rather than be forced, which just creates more stress.

5️⃣ Praise and Encouragement: Celebrating their efforts and bravery makes a huge difference. Positive reinforcement wherever possible can boost their confidence and make future transitions smoother. "Wow you climbed into the car so fast!"."Oh my goodness I didn't realise you could get your shoes on yourself". "Wow you've packed some great toys for this adventure".

Hang in there! You've got this.
