Not only will offering your child choices show them respect and reduce tantrums because they feel like they're in control, it can also help language development.

Think about it, "do you want to go to the park?" Can only warrant a 'yes' or 'no' answer and your kids have probably already mastered those.

When we offer a choice, like "do you want to go to the park or to the beach?" We're modelling more language and giving children an opportunity to imitate us.

There are so many opportunities to offer children a choice and increase their independence:
- getting dressed (blue or green)
- brushing teeth (top or bottom teeth first)
- food (apple or banana)
- play (blocks or cars)
- scheduling (now or in two minutes)

Try and increase the amount of time you offer choices and you'll likely see an increase in vocabulary too!
