STARTING SOLIDS. How I tackle it as a Speech and Language Therapist

STEP 1.
We’re doing a mix of puree feeding and BLW (Baby Led Weaning). I’ve started with puree so that I can monitor how Etta manages the food in her mouth. I chose kumara as her first food. I chopped it roughly, lightly coated with oil and roasted it in the air fryer.

STEP 2.
I added a cube of frozen breast milk to the kumara to make more of a ‘based potato’ texture and to add a familiar flavour. You could as fresh breast milk or formula in the same way. We’re of course using the ‘easy bowl’ from our range. Its microwave-safe for reheating leftovers.

STEP 3.
Mash it all up with a fork! The other cubes of kumara I mashed separately and put in a bowl in the fridge for the next two days. Ou could also serve finger-sized pieces for BLW/finger feeding practice.

STEP 4.
Make sure your little one is well supported. Lap with your body as back support – or check out my highchair highlight. Go really slow and wait for your baby’s cuts before adding another spoonful. Watch to see that they’re swallowing.
