Responding Respectfully to Tantrums

It’s ok to cry. Tantrums are normal.

We have to remember this when our little ones are losing it. They’re experiencing a lot of emotions that they don’t know how to process and it all comes out as a messy explosion.

Our job ISN'T EVER to stop our children from crying, our job is to be there to support them in that moment. Show them that we’re comfortable with whatever feelings they’re having. That we’ll love them at their best AND at their worst. That we don’t just love them when they’re happy and playing, we love them when they’re breaking down. We’re not phased by their outburst, we acknowledge their feelings genuinely and give them space to move through those feelings.

We actually don’t need to do much at all.

  1. Acknowledge.
  2. Name the feeling
  3. Give them the time they need
  4. Be calm and take deep breaths yourself so that they can co-regulate alongside you.

You’ve got this.
