.It was almost an emergency because the toddlers were getting bored and reckless! I found half a bag of rice and some lentils and dumped them in the tray with some extra play bits and let them go wild.

Etta joined in and loved swishing her hands through them. She didn’t really bother trying to eat them but if she did I’d just stay close and gentle prevent her from putting her hands to her mouth, saying “I can’t let you eat it”. A little bit of mouthing is ok, after all babies do use their mouthes to explore everything.
